Diving Certification

Get certified to dive anywhere in the world — right here in Playa del Carmen

Why Get Certified in Playa del Carmen?

One of the best places on Earth to learn to dive

01

Warm Water Year-Round

Water temperatures between 26-29°C (79-84°F) all year. No thick wetsuit, no shivering — just comfortable diving from day one. Perfect conditions for learning.

02

Unmatched Variety

No other destination offers this combination: Caribbean coral reefs, ancient cenotes with crystal-clear freshwater, and seasonal bull shark encounters — all within driving distance.

03

Affordable vs. US & Europe

Getting certified in Playa del Carmen costs a fraction of what you'd pay in the US, UK, or Australia — and you train in open ocean, not a cold lake or quarry.

SSI vs PADI: What You Need to Know

If you're searching for PADI certification in Playa del Carmen, here's what matters: SSI (Scuba Schools International) is the equivalent of PADI — and your SSI certification is valid at every dive center on the planet.

Both SSI and PADI are recognized by the same international standards bodies:

  • ISO compliant — both follow ISO 24801 international diving standards
  • RSTC members — both belong to the Recreational Scuba Training Council
  • Worldwide validity — an SSI Open Water card works at any PADI, SSI, NAUI, or SDI dive center globally

Why SSI?

  • Digital learning — study theory on the SSI app, anytime, at your own pace
  • Lifetime access — your training materials never expire, unlike PADI's timed e-learning
  • Same certification levels — Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, Divemaster, Instructor

What a Typical Certification Week Looks Like

Open Water Diver course, day by day

Day 1

Theory & Pool

Complete your academic review with your instructor. Then head to the pool for confined water training: breathing underwater, mask clearing, buoyancy basics, and safety drills.

Day 2

Open Water Dives 1 & 2

Your first real dives in the Caribbean. Practice skills from the pool at depth, then enjoy guided exploration of coral reefs, tropical fish, and marine life.

Day 3

Open Water Dives 3 & 4

Complete your final two certification dives. More skills, more confidence, more reef. By the end of day 3, you're a certified SSI Open Water Diver.

Day 4+

Dive the Riviera Maya

Now certified, explore on your own terms. Cenote diving, Cozumel reefs, night dives, or start your Advanced Adventurer course. The possibilities are endless.

Pro tip: Complete the SSI online theory before you arrive in Playa del Carmen. This saves a full day and lets you spend more time in the water. Download the free SSI app and study at your own pace — your digital materials never expire.

Frequently Asked Questions

SSI (Scuba Schools International) and PADI are both internationally recognized by ISO and RSTC standards. Your SSI certification is accepted at every dive center worldwide, just like PADI. The training standards, depth limits, and certification levels are equivalent. If you're looking for PADI certification, SSI is the same thing — recognized everywhere.

The SSI Open Water Diver course takes 3-4 days: one day for theory and pool, and two days for 4 open water dives. You can complete the theory online before arriving to save time on your vacation.

The SSI Open Water Diver course at The Dive Machine costs $449 USD. This includes all training materials (digital with lifetime access), pool sessions, 4 open water dives, full equipment rental, and your internationally recognized SSI certification card.

Yes. With an Open Water Diver certification you can dive in cenotes classified as open water or cavern zone (always with a certified cavern guide). Playa del Carmen is the gateway to hundreds of cenotes in the Riviera Maya. Full cave diving requires additional technical certifications.

You need basic swimming ability. The SSI Open Water course requires a 200-meter swim (or 300 meters with mask, snorkel, and fins) and a 10-minute float. You don't need to be an expert swimmer — our instructors work with you at your own pace.
