Light Beams, Halocline and Depth
El Pit is famous for the rays of light that pierce the darkness from the opening above. As you descend, you cross a halocline at about 15 meters, where fresh and salt water meet and blur the view, and at about 30 meters you reach a hydrogen sulfide layer. The cenote reaches about 40 meters, making it a true deep diving experience for Advanced Open Water divers.

Best Season
You can dive El Pit all year round, with cenote water between 24 and 26 °C. Its famous light beams are best seen between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., when the sun is directly overhead, especially in summer. The best months to combine cenotes and reefs in the Riviera Maya are October to April.

You need an Advanced Open Water certification. If you only have Open Water, we recommend cenotes such as Dos Ojos or Casa Cenote, or taking your Advanced course with us first.
The famous light beams are best seen between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., when the sun is directly overhead, especially in summer.
El Pit is in the Tulum area of the Riviera Maya, less than an hour's drive south of Playa del Carmen. We have daily departures from Playa del Carmen and can arrange hotel pickup for an additional fee.
Our cenote diving packages include all equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks, weights, fins, mask and dive light), a certified SSI guide, two cenote dives, lunch, snacks and water. Round-trip transportation is available for an additional fee. Cenote entrance fees are paid by the diver.
