How We Chose Them
The Riviera Maya has hundreds of cenotes, but not all of them are open to diving or suitable for every level. This list brings together the cenotes our certified guides dive most often, from shallow caverns ideal for newly certified divers to deep cenotes for advanced divers. Many of them are access points to Sac Actun, the world’s longest underwater cave system, with more than 370 km of explored passages.
Our Top 10 Cenotes
Dos Ojos
The most famous cavern dive in Mexico: two entrances joined by decorated passages, crystal-clear water and light rays. Part of Sac Actun, the longest underwater cave system in the world.
El Pit
Spectacular light beams that pierce the darkness, a halocline at 15 m and a hydrogen sulfide layer at 30 m.
Angelita
The underwater river: a hydrogen sulfide cloud at about 30 m that looks like a river flowing through the cenote.
Cristalino
Near-perfect visibility, mini caves to explore and fewer crowds than other cenotes.
Casa Cenote
An open-air cenote among mangroves, with calm water, fish, turtles and the occasional crocodile. Ideal for beginners.
Jardín del Edén
Also known as Ponderosa: beautiful light beams, fish, turtles and aquatic plants. Great for underwater photography.
Chac Mool
Famous for its halocline, where fresh and salt water create a blurry visual effect, and for the light beams at the cavern entrance.
Tajmaha
An extensive cavern system with palace-like formations. Recommended for divers with some experience.
Zapote (Hell's Bells)
A hidden gem near Puerto Morelos: less crowded than the most famous cenotes, but just as impressive.
Maravilla
Known for its white formations and a peaceful atmosphere, away from the crowds.

Best Season
You can dive the cenotes of the Riviera Maya all year round: they offer ideal conditions in every season, with water between 24 and 26 °C. The best months to combine cenotes and reefs are October to April, and the light beams of El Pit are best seen between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., especially in summer.
Which Cenote Is Right for You?
If you are newly certified, start with Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote, Cristalino or Jardín del Edén: shallow depths, excellent visibility and easy access. With an Advanced Open Water certification you can dive the deep cenotes, such as El Pit, Angelita and Zapote. And if you are not certified yet, our Discover Scuba experience lets you explore select cenotes with a qualified instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on your level. Dos Ojos is the most famous cavern dive in Mexico and ideal for Open Water divers; El Pit and Angelita are the favorites of advanced divers for their light beams and hydrogen sulfide cloud; and Cristalino stands out for its near-perfect visibility.
For newly certified divers, we recommend Chac Mool, Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote and Cristalino. These cenotes offer shallow depths (6 to 12 meters), excellent visibility, easy entry points and stunning formations. Our guides will select the best cenote based on your comfort level and experience on the day of the dive.
Not necessarily. If you have an Open Water certification or higher, you can join our Fun Dives in cenotes right away. If you're not certified, our Discover Scuba Diving experience lets you explore select cenotes with a fully qualified instructor, with no prior training required. We also offer full Open Water courses that include cenote diving as part of the training.
Among the cenotes we dive, Angelita reaches about 60 meters and El Pit about 40 meters. Recreational dives in both go to around 30 meters, where their hydrogen sulfide layer is, and require Advanced Open Water certification.
Our cenote diving packages include all equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks, weights, fins, mask and dive light), a certified SSI guide, two cenote dives, lunch, snacks and water. Round-trip transportation is available for an additional fee. Cenote entrance fees are paid by the diver.
