How Deep Are Cenotes?

Cenotes vary a lot in depth. Cavern dives for Open Water divers usually stay between about 8 and 15 meters, within the natural light zone. Deep cenotes such as Angelita and El Pit go much further down, and their recreational dives reach around 30 meters, where haloclines and hydrogen sulfide layers create some of the most surreal sights in cenote diving. Deep cenotes require Advanced Open Water certification.
